Visa Processing Times (January 2017)

The standard visa processing time is 30 days unless there is compelling and compassionate reason for urgent travel (unless specific compelling and compassionate circumstances apply which warrant prioritization of your application such as serious illness or death of family member in Australia).

It is important to submit supporting documentary evidence with your visa application.

It is in your interest to lodge your visa application as earlier as possible and well in advance of your proposed date of travel. You may wish to consider lodging your visa application at least 3 months before your proposed date of travel. Note: Visitor visas are usually granted with a validity period of 12 months.

Please note that lodging your visa application well in advance of your proposed date of travel will enable this office process, assess and finalize your visa application in a timely manner which in turn will allow you sufficient time to prepare for your travel and travel on the scheduled date without any pressure.

If you enter into any financial commitments prior to the grant of the visa, you do so at your own risk. Please lodge your visa with plenty of time before you plan to travel. If you lodge your visa at short notice, you may be disappointed if you are not granted your visa in time for your planned date of travel. We strongly advise that you do not confirm any travel plans until you have received a decision about your visa.

An airline ticket is not a visa requirement and does not in itself lead to a visa being granted. You should not make unalterable or non-refundable travel arrangements until you have confirmation that you have been granted a visa to travel to Australia. The department will not be liable for any financial loss incurred by clients whose visa application was finalised later than expected or where an application is unsuccessful.
