We leave for Leh visiting Lamayuru & Alchi monasteries. We also see, Maitreyan Buddha – an endowment of great loving kindness of all Buddhas. Closer to Leh we stop briefly at magnetic hill and Sikh gurudwara shrine enroute if group wish to.
Lamayuru: known for its monastery, & unique “lunar” landscape with its spectacularly odd geological formations. The gompa consisted originally of five buildings, and some remains of the four corner buildings can still be seen. It is one of the largest and oldest gompas in Ladakh, with a population of around 150 permanent monks’ resident. Being at an elevated location (11500 feet), Monastery gives excellent views of the mountains all around, including the view and feel of Moon land. The monastery is very old and the paintings inside are very beautiful.
Alchi Monastery: It’s the oldest and most revered monastery of this region. These are some of the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh. The complex also has huge statues of the Buddha and elaborate wood carvings and art-work comparable to the baroque style. Shakti Maira has vividly explained the beauty of this small monastery.
At the Magnetic hill you see your vehicle going towards height without engine being switched on. Its good fun stop. Late arrival into Leh and check in at your hotel Kesar Palace.
Day excursion to Thiksey and Hemis Monastery.
Thiksey: 19 kms from and Leh spectacularly sited, Thikse is one of the largest and architecturally most impressive gompas. There are several temples in this gompa containing images, stupas and wall paintings of Buddha which are exquisite.
Hemis: 40 kms from Leh it is the wealthiest best known and biggest gompa of Ladakh. Its popularity stems from the major annual festival held here in summer. The festival is in honor of guru padma samb-hav’s birth anniversary. it also has the largest thanka in Ladakh which is unfurled once in 12 years. This year it was from 28/29 June. On these days hundreds of pilgrims will gather at hemis to pay their tribute and homage.
Day excursion to Pangong Lake, made popular by Three Idiots movie. We go over Chang La Pass pas at 17000 feet on way to beautiful Lake Pangong. Pangong Lake, situated at a height of almost 13,500 feet, is the world’s highest saltwater lake. Its water, which seems to be dyed in blue, stand in stark contrast to the arid mountains surrounding it. Extending to almost 160km, one-third of the Pangong Lake lies in India and the other two-third is in China.
